Setting the Table Properly: Stylishly Arranging Plates, Cutlery, and Glasses

A beautifully set table creates atmosphere and turns every meal into an experience. JL Living shows how plates, cutlery, glasses, and napkins can be harmoniously arranged – for special occasions, relaxed evenings, or everyday life with a touch of elegance. Because aesthetics begin where enjoyment meets design.

Tips for Setting the Table

Step 1: Choose Table Linens

Tablecloths protect the table while adding character. Alternatively, placemats are suitable for individual settings, or a table runner can serve as a decorative element in the center. Cloth napkins complete the overall look and can be placed flexibly on the plate or beside the cutlery.

Step 2: Place the Plates

The plate is centered in front of the seat. Optionally, a charger plate serves as a decorative base on which the other plates are arranged. If bread is served, the bread plate is placed to the upper left of the main plate, with the bread knife directly on it.

Step 3: Set the Cutlery

Cutlery is used from the outside in. Forks are placed to the left, knives to the right of the plate. Dessert cutlery is placed above the plate. Make sure the cutlery is clean, polished, and evenly spaced from the edge of the table.

Step 4: Arrange the Glasses

Glasses are placed to the upper right of the plate. The starting point is the glass for the main course, usually a wine glass. Additional glasses are added to the right, with the water glass placed on the outside.
